Muhammad Baig has 10 children, and each day he is burdened by the weight of worry. As the sole breadwinner, he works on daily wages, struggling to make ends meet. "I am the sole breadwinner," he says, his words marked by exhaustion. "Sometimes I find work, other times I don’t." The unpredictability of his income means that he can never be certain if he’ll have enough to provide for his large family, and the constant uncertainty takes its toll.
But amid this daily struggle, Muhammad’s greatest concern is his adult daughter, Shabana, who suffers from a severe intellectual disability. "It is treatable, but I don’t have enough money for it," he explains, the helplessness in his voice unmistakable. The doctors have made it clear that her condition could be treated, but the cost is far beyond his means. The burden of Shabana’s care has fallen solely on him and his family, and the severity of her condition means that they must do everything for her. To prevent her from wandering off and potentially getting lost while he is working, they’ve had no choice but to chain her—an unimaginable and heart-wrenching decision made out of necessity.
"I cannot afford her treatment," Muhammad admits, the pain in his voice palpable. The weight of the choice he faces each day is unbearable. "Should I feed my children or pay for her treatment?" His question, filled with desperation, speaks to the difficult choices many parents face when resources are limited. In his plea, he humbly asks for help: "I humbly request you for your kindness. If my child recovers, we will pray for you."
